How Long Does SEO Take to Work?
The honest answer is four to seven months before meaningful movement on competitive UK commercial terms, and around twelve before the position is stable. Most agencies say three, because three is what wins the pitch.
But "SEO" is four different disciplines with four different clock speeds, and knowing which one you need changes the answer substantially.
What moves fast
Technical fixes: days to weeks. If pages were blocked, misconfigured or unindexable, fixing that can produce movement almost immediately — Google simply needs to recrawl. This is the only part of SEO that can genuinely deliver inside a fortnight, and it only applies when indexation was the constraint.
Google Business Profile: two to six weeks. Local pack position responds quickly to category and completeness changes. Local is the fastest-moving discipline in search.
Title and meta rewrites: one to three weeks. These affect click-through rather than position, but a better CTR on an existing position is often the cheapest traffic gain available.
What takes months
New content: three to six months. A new page has to be crawled, indexed, assessed and then gradually tested against incumbents. Early positions are usually poor and improve as engagement data accumulates.
Authority: six to twelve months. Individual links can act within weeks. Domain-level trust accumulates slowly, and this is the discipline most often abandoned right before it starts paying.
Competitive head terms: nine to eighteen months. Terms held by domains with a decade of age and sustained link budgets do not yield to six months of content.
A realistic timeline
Month 1. Audit, baseline, keyword mapping. Almost nothing visible happens. This is the month clients find hardest and it is the most important one.
Months 2–3. Technical fixes ship. Indexation improves. If crawl was the constraint, early gains appear here. Content production begins.
Months 4–6. Published content starts ranking, initially on long-tail. Traffic moves before positions on head terms do. This is where the trend line becomes readable.
Months 7–12. Compounding. Authority work registers, content matures, head terms move. Enquiry volume becomes predictable enough to forecast.
Month 12+. Maintenance and expansion. Refreshing decaying pages, defending positions, widening the footprint.
What makes it slower
- A new domain. No history, no links, no trust. Add three to six months to everything.
- A penalty or manual action. Recovery comes before growth.
- Slow implementation. Recommendations sitting in a development backlog for two months delay the clock by two months.
- Changing direction quarterly. The most common cause of an SEO programme failing is not a bad strategy — it is three strategies in twelve months.
What to watch before rankings move
Rankings are a lagging indicator. Earlier signals that the work is landing:
- Indexed page count moving toward the number of pages you actually want indexed.
- Impressions rising in Search Console even while clicks are flat — you are being shown for more queries.
- Average position improving from 60 to 30. Invisible in traffic, but it is the same distance as 30 to 10, which is not.
- Referring domain count rising.
- Core Web Vitals moving from failing to passing in field data.
If none of these are moving by month three, something is wrong and it is worth asking directly.
