UK English and SEO: Why Spelling Splits Your Keywords

Published Sep 07, 2026 • Author: Rezz Admin
Optimisation and optimization return different result sets. What that costs you, and the other things that differ about targeting UK search.

Optimising for the UK is not optimising for the US with the spelling changed — but the spelling is a good place to start, because getting it wrong halves your reachable volume on a large set of terms.

Spelling splits the keyword

"SEO optimisation" and "SEO optimization" return overlapping but distinct result sets. Google understands they are related, but it does not treat them as identical, and a page using one consistently will generally rank better for that variant.

The variants that matter most in commercial UK search:

UKUS
optimisation, optimiseoptimization, optimize
specialise, specialistspecialize
analyse, analysinganalyze, analyzing
centrecenter
programme (not code)program
cataloguecatalog
enquiryinquiry
licence (noun)license

Pick the UK variant and use it consistently. Mixing both in one page does not capture both — it just reads as careless.

google.co.uk is not google.com

The same query returns different results on each. If your rank tracking is configured against the wrong one, your numbers describe a market you are not selling to. Check the tracking configuration before you interpret a single report.

Geography is more granular here

UK searchers qualify by town, borough and county far more than by region. "SEO agency Stockport" is a real query with real intent. "SEO agency North West" is much vaguer and converts worse.

This has an architectural consequence: the reachable long tail is town-level, but building a page per town is a doorway pattern. The workable approach is a strong city page that genuinely covers its surrounding towns, rather than thirty thin ones.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are separate jurisdictions

Scots law differs materially from English and Welsh law on property, employment, contracts and much else. Content written for England and reused in Scotland is not merely less relevant — it is factually wrong.

For any business touching those areas, genuinely Scottish content is both a correctness requirement and a real differentiator, because almost nobody bothers.

Trust signals differ

UK buyers look for Companies House registration, VAT number, trade body membership, and reviews on platforms they recognise. US-style trust badges carry little weight. A registered address and company number in the footer does more for UK conversion than a row of unfamiliar seals.

Conventions to get right

  • Dates as DD/MM/YYYY, or written out to avoid ambiguity.
  • Currency in GBP with the symbol before the figure.
  • Phone numbers in +44 format for international, 0 format for domestic display.
  • Postcodes formatted correctly — they are used in local search and in address validation.
  • Measurements — the UK uses both metric and imperial depending on context. Miles for distance, stone for body weight, metric for most else.

Set the signals

  • lang="en-GB" on the html element.
  • og:locale set to en_GB.
  • A .co.uk domain if you have one — it is a mild but genuine geographic signal.
  • UK address and phone number visible in the footer and in schema, if you have them.
  • hreflang only if you actually run regional variants. Implementing it without them creates problems rather than solving any.
