How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK? A Straight Answer
Most agencies will not publish pricing, which wastes everybody's time. Here are the bands that actually exist in the UK market, what sits behind each, and the arithmetic that explains them.
The honest price bands
UK SEO retainers cluster into four tiers. The differences are almost entirely about how many senior hours the retainer funds.
| Band | Monthly | Realistically buys |
|---|---|---|
| Below the floor | Under £400 | Reporting, minor on-page tweaks, and not much else |
| Focused | £400–£700 | One service line, one location, a defined keyword set |
| Standard | £700–£1,500 | Technical plus content plus links, running in parallel |
| Competitive | £1,500–£4,000+ | Multi-location, large catalogues, or genuinely contested verticals |
Why there is a floor
Work through the arithmetic. A competent UK SEO specialist costs an agency somewhere between £40 and £80 an hour once salary, overhead and non-billable time are accounted for. A £300/month retainer therefore funds roughly four to seven hours.
Four hours a month covers a reporting pull and a couple of small changes. It does not cover a technical audit, content production, outreach and analysis. So the retainer either delivers almost nothing, or it delivers volume produced by someone junior working from a template — which is worse than nothing, because it creates cleanup work.
This is why cheap SEO has a reputation. It is not that the agencies are dishonest. It is that the number does not contain enough hours to do the work.
What changes the price
- Competition in your vertical. A niche B2B term and "insurance London" require completely different investment for the same position.
- Site size. A 20-page brochure site and a 40,000-SKU catalogue are different disciplines.
- Starting condition. A site with a clean technical base starts producing sooner. One carrying a decade of accumulated debt spends the first quarter on remediation.
- Geography. Single location is cheaper than fifteen, which each need their own profile, page and review stream.
- How much you can implement. If your development team ships quickly, more of the retainer goes into strategy. If we implement everything, more goes into execution.
Retainer, project or hourly?
Retainers suit ongoing visibility work, which is most cases — SEO compounds, and stopping resets the compounding.
Fixed-price projects suit bounded work with a clear end: a technical audit, a migration, a one-off content build. Expect £1,500–£6,000 for a thorough audit of a mid-sized site.
Hourly suits consulting where your team executes and you need direction. £75–£200 an hour in the UK depending on seniority.
Questions that expose a bad quote
- "How many senior hours does this fund each month?" If the answer is vague, the retainer is mostly junior time.
- "What happens in month one?" A good answer is diagnostic. A bad answer starts with publishing blog posts before anyone has looked at the site.
- "Who owns the accounts?" If the agency holds Search Console and Analytics, you cannot leave without losing your history. That is deliberate.
- "What would make you tell us to stop?" An agency that cannot answer this has never told a client the truth about a plateau.
- "Can I see the reporting template?" If it leads with rankings and impressions rather than enquiries, it is designed to look good rather than to inform.
What it costs with us
We publish our ranges: £450/month for a focused scope, £950/month for our standard retainer, and £1,800+/month for multi-location or large-catalogue work. Three months initially because the first quarter is foundational, then rolling with 30 days' notice.
If your situation does not fit those bands, we will say so at the audit stage rather than sell you a tier that cannot do the job.
