How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews

Published Aug 18, 2026 • Author: Rezz Admin
The structural patterns that get passages extracted into AI Overviews, and what to do about the traffic those answers absorb.

AI Overviews now appear on a substantial share of informational queries and a growing share of commercial ones. When one appears, it absorbs attention that used to go to the top organic results. Being cited inside it is the way to stay visible.

Overviews cite passages, not pages

This is the central mechanic and it changes what you optimise. Google extracts a specific passage that answers the query. Your page can rank fourth and still be the cited source if it contains the cleanest available answer.

The practical consequence: optimise section by section, not page by page.

Structure that gets extracted

Question-shaped headings. Use the phrasing people actually search — "How much does SEO cost in the UK?" rather than "Pricing considerations".

The answer immediately underneath. First sentence, complete, no preamble. If a reader gets the answer from that one sentence, so does the model.

Then the detail. Caveats, context and nuance after the answer, not before it.

Self-contained sections. Avoid "as mentioned above" and "as we discussed". An extracted passage carries none of that context.

Formats that get picked up disproportionately

  • Tables for anything comparative. Overviews lift tabular data readily.
  • Numbered steps for processes. Keep each step to one action.
  • Definition sentences in the pattern "X is a Y that Z".
  • Short bulleted lists with parallel structure.

Signals beyond structure

Named authors with credentials. Content attributed to "Admin" carries less weight, particularly on health, finance and legal topics.

Primary sources. Cite official documentation and published research rather than other blog posts.

Genuine freshness. Update dates that reflect real revision, not a scheduled timestamp change.

Original data. The strongest single differentiator. A number that exists nowhere else gives the model a reason to cite you specifically.

The traffic question

AI Overviews reduce clicks on informational queries. That is real and it is not going to reverse. Sensible responses:

  • Shift weight toward commercial intent. Queries where someone is choosing a supplier still produce clicks, because the decision cannot be made inside the answer.
  • Treat citation as brand visibility. Being named as the source in an answer has value even without the click.
  • Build things an answer cannot replace — tools, calculators, data, community.
  • Track impressions as well as clicks. Appearing in an Overview is visibility that click-based reporting will not show you.

A note on FAQ schema

FAQPage rich results were retired in mid-2026, so FAQ markup no longer earns the expanded result it once did. FAQ content itself is still valuable — for readers and for AI extraction — but build it for those purposes rather than for a rich result that no longer appears.
